Activity
Herbicide. Bispyribac-sodium is a broad-spectrum herbicide that controls annual and perennial grasses, broadleaf weeds and sedges. It has a wide window of application and can be used from the 1-7 leaf stages of Echinochloa spp; the recommended timing being the 3-4 leaf stage. The product is for foliar application. Flooding of the paddy field is recommended within 1-3 days of application. Following application, the weeds take approximately two weeks to die. Plants exhibit chlorosis and cessation of growth 3 to 5 days after application. This is followed by necrosis of terminal tissues.
For growth regulator use, bispyribac-sodium should be applied before weeds are 10 cm tall in rice fields and before weeds are 30 cm tall in non-agricultural areas. The use of non-ionic surfactants; silicon-type adjuvants and crop oil concentrates is recommended for optimum activity.
In the US, bispyribac-sodium is intended for use in a programme with other rice herbicides (SWSS, 2000). Tank mixtures with Kumiai’s thiobencarb (Bolero) provide control of weeds such as sprangletop (Leptochloa fascicularis) and watergrass (Luziola fluitans). One application of 22 g ai/ha is usually sufficient and the product can be used in dry-seeded and water-seeded rice cultivations as a pre- or post-flood treatment. Tank mixtures of bispyribac-sodium and carfentrazone have been shown to be effective against sedge (Cyperus compressus) and watergrass when applied at the 5-6 leaf stage. It may be used a pre- or post-flood treatment for grasses which escape control by programmes based on Command (clomazone), Prowl (pendimethalin), Stam (propanil) or Arrosolo (molinate + propanil).
In US field trials, bispyribac-sodium controlled propanil-resistant Echinochloa species (Weed Tech, 2002). Crop safety varies amongst the US rice cultivars tested (Cocodrie and Bengal) and tolerance may be associated with the growth stage at application.
Kumiai recommends one application per season for herbicidal use and two applications per season for growth regulator use.
In tropical rice cultivation areas, Nominee 100SC is recommended for application to transplanted, wet direct-seeded and dry direct-seeded rice at the 2-4 leaf stage of weeds or 7-15 days after seeding / transplanting. |
